COBOURG JAZZ PRESENTS
THE BEVERLY TAFT TRIO

OCTOBER 15 • 2:00pm

Beverly Taft, Tania Gill (piano) and Shawn Nykwist (saxophone) perform selections from Broadway great Frank Loesser’s more than 700 songs, including “Let’s Get Lost,” “Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year,” “Inch Worm,” “I Believe In You,” “More I Cannot Wish You,” “On a Slowboat to China,” “If I Were A Bell,” “Heart and Soul,” and “Says My Heart,” which dates back to 1938. Beverly has stories to share about these songs and the man behind them, including Loesser’s Broadway adventures, Hollywood challenges and successes, and his notorious clash with Frank Sinatra.

Composer and lyricist Frank Loesser is best known for standout musicals “Guys and Dolls” – and the Pulitzer-prize winning blockbuster “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” which gave us “I Believe In You,” recorded by Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Anita O’Day, Frank Sinatra, and many other jazz and pop interpreters.  Loesser’s Broadway music has become part of the legit jazz canon, thanks to its enduring musicality, and definitive recordings by players like Miles Davis (“If I Were A Bell”) and John Coltrane (“Inch Worm”).

Beverly Taft is "charming," "delightful" and "100% pure beautiful jazz." , She performs regularly at Toronto clubs including Jazz Bistro, Lula Lounge, and The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar, and has played abroad at jazz festivals and clubs in Japan and Brazil.  Her repertoire spans five decades and a few continents, and in addition to leading her own "straight ahead and swingin'" jazz combo, she's involved in or leads several different musical ventures, including "The Bossa Nova Project" (in Portuguese and English), "Beverly and The Swell Fellas" (20s, 30s and 40s), and “Les Chansonnettes” (French jazz and cabaret material). You may have seen Beverly come out of the audience at The LOFT back in the spring to sing with Neil Swainson, Reg Schwager and San Murata. The Loft Cinema is an intimate soft seat theatre with excellent sound and sight lines - on the second floor of a beautiful 1922 art deco building in downtown Cobourg.

Tickets are $20 + service charge at Vic Hall Box Office 905-372-2210. Performance is at the Loft • 201 Division Street, Cobourg
